Last, the wood plinth is beautiful and the machine is dead simple. As far as W&F, I cannot hear anything but smooth playback, including on orchestral and piano pieces.

The Orbit is neither built like a Technics, nor does it convey a feeling of fragility to me. I'm in a stable period of my life and the turntable will likely not be moved from where I placed it for years to come. They are incredibly responsive and I would buy from them for that reason alone. I'm talking about an email to the company being answered on a weekend evening by one of the owners of the company. I upgraded to a Technics SL-1500C and it’s a big improvement in every aspect of sound. Project seems to be more of a balance and having several with carbon fiber, but I have yet to hear one so it’s hard for me to say. I may be the first person here who has spoken highly about the customer service, but a quick web search will reveal that U-Turn's strong suit is their incredible service. Entry model Rega’s are pretty much the opposite, all the money went into the tonearm & joints/bearings and the plinth basic. I really don't like the 2M Red cart it comes with, other than that it sounds okay assuming you don't get one with a noisy motor or that issue doesn't develop over time. W/F is better than the U-Turn, build quality is a bit better but not as good as it could be. The arm is very lightweight (6gm effective mass IIRC) and will only be compatible with a small number of cartridges unless you want to screw around with ugly metal plate weights. Lots of well-documented issues with noisy/buzzing motors, horrible motor mount design, etc. The Pro-Ject looks better but isn't that great IMHO. Other than the W/F, they sound okay and will not harm your records.Personally I think the value of a U-Turn drops dramatically once you get past the basic model with a cue lever and a $40 cart.
#Project debut carbon vs. uturn special upgrade#
They do not even meet 1970s broadcast radio standards IIRC, even if you upgrade to the acrylic platter. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC Turntable is consistently the bestselling listening turntable in the 300-500 price range. Where the U-Turn falters is the too high W/F figures. Unless I was forced to choose between these two units, I would get something else.
